So you’re looking for some where to spend a long weekend and you can’t think where…Well there is no place better than the Big Apple, New York City.
Here is how I spent my Labour Day weekend and tips on how you can make the best out of the little time you have.
Once you get into the city, if your arrival time is earlier than your check-in time, find a place to store your bags – I highly recommend doing this so that you can get the most out of your day without carrying around your luggage. If you’re staying at a hotel, most places will store your luggage for free however, if you’re staying at an Air BnB I recommend you find a storage place online – Trust me you’ll thank me later.
Next – Explore the city:
Grab some vegan food
Seasoned Vegan – The absolute best Vegan food I have ever had…did I mention it is a Black owned all vegan soul food restaurant. To say I was more than excited when I saw the variety of foods to choose from is an understatement. They pride themselves in serving, “the food you love, veganized”.
The food was amazing and the dessert was even better!
If you are ever in New York, I highly recommend that you make this one of your stops – check out their website for more information https://www.seasonedvegan.com
Lion King on Broadway!
Anyone who knows me knows that I am an avid Disney lover, a fanatic some would say! So when we arrived at the Theatre, I could not contain my excitement. Before the show started we grabbed some mementos from the store to remember what I knew would be a wonderful night.
The show begins…
You should have seen my face – it was lit up like a kid in a candy store. The show started with a BANG and the wow effect lasted throughout the show. There was so much going on, so much beautiful, talented melanin in one place! I wanted to join in – singing and dancing – and for a moment I daydreamed of what that would be like but, that is not one of the gifts God has given me so I quickly returned to reality lol.
We had great seats! I would recommend that if you can spare a few extra dollars, you should go for the seats closer to the front and near the aisle, even though I’m sure the show looked great from all angles.
The show was magnificent!
Explore Times Square at Night….Did someone say shopping!
I love walking around Time Square at night. It is so beautiful with all the lights and what’s even better…the stores stay open late. We walked around looking from store to store and then… I made a beeline for Sephora to get some Fenty Beauty products (RiRi – that Fenty Beauty hunny – yaaass – ok nuff said)
Sunday Morning Service – Hillsong
We decided to visit Hillsong to get our Sunday morning service in before we went about our day. I enjoyed the worship and the message – for the life of me, I can’t remember at this moment – not a refection of the preacher – perhaps a reflection of growing older…! It had a very laid back vibe with the emphasis on worship. I’d recommend checking it out if you are looking for a Sunday service. Hillsong has four different services that you can choose from so that will be easy to fit into your schedule – just don’t forget the message, lol.
After eating lunch at Beyond Sushi, an all Vegan Sushi place, (https://beyondsushi.com/) we decided to go for a walk down to Central Park. We relaxed for a bit and just enjoyed the variety of sights, people, structure, animal, and t’ings.
There’s a lot to do in the park and we will definitely be going back – perhaps we will explore more and maybe even take a carriage ride, bicycle ride or a run.
Sip & Paint
I am by no means an artist and as a matter of fact I thought my artistic abilities were -0 (minus zero) but, I was proven wrong. With God being our creator, we are all creators of one thing or another. He has provided us with many gifts that we just have to explore and tap into.
I absolutely loved this class and it’s perfect for a beginner! It was a way for us to try something new as well as explore our creativity and surprisingly, it was no stress…so very relaxing. The class was a good size and the teacher was funny, the instructions very easy to follow.
If you are ready to try something new and different whilst on vacation, I recommend trying this class.

Empire State Building
This is absolutely worth seeing especially at night! We went after our Sip & Paint class, it was near midnight and still full of people. The view is as amazing as you’d expect. It is a beautiful building inside and out.
Day 3 (Half Day) – Labour Day
This day was spent relaxing, eating and shopping. It was a great way to end our time before heading back to the airport.
Tips to Remember:
- On a budget? Airbnb over hotel, it is cheaper and you will more than likely have more space
- Lion King on Broadway is a MUST SEE! I cannot emphasize this enough.
- Do research the city and make plan some things to do before you go so you don’t get overwhelmed
- Try something different ie. Sip&Paint class (IG @paintandsipny)
- It is okay if you don’t accomplish everything on your itinerary, you can always go back.
